Croydon Historical Society – the history of recorded sound

This evening I attended a Croydon Historical Society meeting to visit the group and to learn about the topics that interest its members.

The Society meets on a monthly basis and tonight’s meeting covered the history of sound, with a guest speaker from Eastern FM. The presentation covered the various recording formats, including vinyl, cassettes and CDs and the methods in which studios recorded sound for distribution.

Recording speeches and music is another aspect of preserving our history and it was great to see that the presentation stimulated discussion around how the historical society could record the speakers they have present at meetings.

The Ringwood and Croydon Historical Societies play a key role in preserving our history for the future and I look forward to ongoing participation within both groups.

My Question is that a Mr. Kelvin Gough was a Croydon Councilor in the 70’s to 90’s period. I would like to know if he was ever the Mayor of Croydon and the dates of when if he was, please.
Can you get some one to let me know or where i could look up this information. Thank you.

  2. Dear Janettie,

Thank you for visiting my website and for your query.

I will check with council to confirm the dates when Kelvin Gough was a councillor and whether he was a Mayor of the former City of Croydon.

    Thanks,

    Alex

  3. Dear Janettie,

Council has checked its archives and there is no indication that Kelvin Gough was a Mayor during the City of Croydon.

Croydon was constituted as a City on the 22nd of May 1971 and ceded from the Shire of Lilydale in May 1961. During this time there is no indication that Kelvin Gough served as Mayor.

I hope this assists you in your enquiries, please contact me if I can assist you further.

    Thanks,

    Alex

I am interested to know if any photos exist of the old cottage that once stood in the grounds of Croydon P.S .It was situated on the Croydon Rd side opposite the fire station. My grade 2 yr was spent in the old pioneer cottage in 1957,the teacher was a Miss Hogan.I don’t remember classes held in there after that time as the building was comdemned,I’m not sure when it was demolished.I did attend the 50 yr celebration of the school, asked a rep from the historical soc about the cottage and was told that to his knowledge it never existed,he was very wrong, hope you can help me,thanking you,Yvonne Stephens.

  5. Yvonne,

Thank you for visiting my website and for enquiry. The Croydon Historical Society has extensive archives so they would be the best point of contact, not sure who you spoke to previously, but their President, Les Hutchinson, can be contacted on 9294 564.

    Thanks,

    Alex
