TWiSK: Dog owners are barking mad about changes to dog off leash spaces

This Week in St Kilda (TWiSK) covers local news across Port Phillip.

This week TWiSK has reported on the ongoing concerns our dog community has over proposed Dog Off-Leash Guidelines that will potentially reduce off-leash spaces across Port Phillip.

The proposed guidelines do not offer any new dog-leash areas and fail to accommodate future growth in dog ownership. We are therefore calling on Council to substantively alter the guidelines so they genuinely reflect the views of our community.

Alex Makin, Port Melbourne dog owner was in the meeting as gave this comment to TWiSK:
‘Council’s community engagement shows the proposed guidelines have failed to meet their objectives and lack community support.  The community’s rejection of these guidelines demonstrates Council must do more than minor tinkering by August. The guidelines or changes to dog off leash spaces must not go back to Council until major changes are made.’

Council’s own consultation process has confirmed that the Guidelines fail to meet community expectations . For example, just 30% of the community believes that it will help Council to decide which locations are suitable for off-leash spaces.
