Port Phillip Council holds Council meetings on a fortnightly basis with tonight’s meeting marking the first Ordinary Meeting of Council within this term of Port Phillip Council.
One of the most important aspects of a Council meeting is the opportunity to hear from the community. Tonight, several residents highlighted ongoing safety concerns within St Kilda and are seeking stronger involvement from both Port Phillip Council and Victoria Police to improve community safety within St Kilda and Port Phillip more broadly.
It is clear that community safety is an issue that requires active leadership from the City of Port Phillip through an approach that supports early intervention, deterrence and enforcement. It’s fair to say that the new Council has recognised the need to improve community, and I thank the many members of the St Kilda community who openly shared their lived experiences of being unsafe within their own neighbourhoods.
Questions were also asked about the Dog off Leash Guidelines, and I sought clarification over Counci’s timelines for the commencement of community consultation is currently scheduled to within March or April. I am seeking further clarifications on this timeframe, as it is important Council honour its commitment of beginning implementation in early 2025.
