This afternoon I joined South Melbourne Councillor Beti Jay, along with Albert Park Ward Councillor Rod Hardy and Alma Ward Councillor Justin Halliday to tour the Port Phillip Men’s Shed located in Dorcas Street South Melbourne.
While known as a Men’s Shed, the facilities and membership are open to all genders, covering woodwork, metalwork and gardening.
The Shed provides members with use of the organisation’s facilities and the abilit to work on a range of projects, including furniture or items for other community organisations, alongside individual personal projects of interest.
Men’s Sheds have been shown to reduce social isolation by building community and comraderie by working together on shared projects. The fact that Port Phillip Men’s Shed is open to all genders reinforces its importance in building community.
