The Port Phillip SES Unit is based at 525 Williamstown Road behind Back2Bikes within the Sandridge precinct of Fishermans Bend and shares some of its facilities with the Port Melbourne Football Club.
This afternoon I was invited by the Port Phillip SES Unit to tour to meet and tour their facilities.
The SES is powered by volunteers who respond as part of the Victoria State Emergency Service to flood, storm, tsunami, earthquake and landslide events throughout Victoria. Port Phillip is particularly susceptible to flood and storm events, with the SES being a core response to these events.
Like many of our community facilities, the Port Phillip SES is facing considerable uncertainty while development is underway within Fishermans Bend. I’m keen to see the City of Port Phillip develop a Community Infrastructure Plan which will enable Council to assess its current community infrastructure, what will be needed in the future and then identifying how we close that gap.
With a projected additional 80,000 residents in Fishermans Bend alone alongside increasing densification, Port Phillip is a high growth municipality and unless we clearly plan for the future, we will not be in a position to deliver on our community needs.
